MegaVoxx Call

Straight answer

Switching agencies

What your current agency is holding, what you can get back, and the one thing to do before you tell them.

Before you tell them

The first move isn’t the phone call to your agency.

Lock down what belongs to you first. Change the passwords on anything you can reach. Move what can be moved into accounts in your own name. If you want us to, we’ll clone whatever we can before anybody knows a change is coming.

Start with the map listing, because it’s the one nobody can find. More often than not, nobody still working at the company knows who set it up or which account controls it. We track that down and get it into your hands where we can, and it matters more than the website does, because it’s usually the thing producing most of your calls.

This isn’t us being dramatic. Most of the time an outgoing agency is difficult rather than dangerous, and you get through it. But we have watched an agency delete a client’s digital files after being told they were leaving, and there’s no undoing that once it has happened.

None of this is aggressive, and it isn’t a trick. It’s your website, your ad account, your numbers and your history. Securing your own property before you give notice is what any reasonable person would do with a set of keys, and the only reason it feels underhanded is that nobody tells you to do it.

What they’re actually holding

Four things keep people stuck, and only one of them is worth much.

The reason leaving feels impossible is that it looks like starting from zero. It usually isn’t. Here is each one, and what is honestly recoverable.

They own your website

This is the easiest of the four, and it’s the one people fear most. If the site is worth keeping, we clone what is live and rebuild it to match. If it isn’t, we build a new one, which is often the better outcome anyway because a site built by an agency that owned it was rarely built to be found.

Either way the new one is registered to your business, and you can take it anywhere afterwards. How we build them is on its own page, and so is the testing behind the way we build them.

They own your ad account

Here we’ll tell you something you’d rather not hear. If they won’t release it, there isn’t much anyone can do short of legal action, and the account is rarely worth what a lawyer costs. We build you a new one, in your name, and you start fresh.

You’ll lose the spend history. That’s a real loss and we won’t pretend otherwise. What you get back is an account nobody can hold over you again.

They own your tracking numbers

If the old agency cooperates, numbers can be ported. Plenty of them do, because a professional handover costs them nothing and their reputation is worth more than the spite. When they don’t, the answer is the same as the ad account: new numbers, in your name, from the start.

If the number on your truck and your signs is your own line rather than theirs, none of this touches it.

You’re inside a term

This is the one that stops most people, and it stops them for no reason. A contract you can’t break yet isn’t a contract you have to sit still inside. We build during your remaining months, while you’re still paying them, so that the day the term ends the new work is already live rather than beginning.

You leave on the last day of the term instead of leaving and then waiting three months to be visible again.

How the move goes

Usually a month of running both, then a clean stop.

We run alongside whoever you have now before anything gets switched off. Often for a month. Nothing is turned off on a promise, and you aren’t asked to take our word for how it will go while your phone is the thing at risk.

The old work keeps running while the new work comes up next to it. You can see both. When you’re satisfied the new one is producing, the old one stops, and by then stopping it is a formality rather than a leap.

You’ll know how it went the same way you know everything else here: how many calls you got, and how many people got in touch through your website. If those numbers are worse after the move, we haven’t earned the switch and you should say so.

What this costs you, honestly.

Some history, and some patience. The ad account history is the real casualty and it’s worth naming plainly rather than burying: a new account has no record of what worked, and it takes time to rebuild that.

What it doesn’t cost you is your position. The website comes across or gets rebuilt better, the listing was never theirs to take, and the reviews on your profile belong to your business and stay put no matter who you pay.

The thing people expect to lose and don’t is the map listing. It’s attached to your business, not to your agency. Owning it and controlling it are different things, and plenty of businesses turn out to have no idea which account holds theirs, but that’s a problem with an answer rather than a loss. Whatever else happens in a switch, that keeps working, which is usually the part producing most of your calls in the first place.

Before you believe any of this

Ask us the same questions you should have asked them.

Everything above is what we say we do. You have heard an agency say reassuring things before, so here is how to check this one.

  • Who owns the website when we’re finished? The answer is you, and it should be written down before you pay anything.
  • Whose name is on the ad account? Yours. If any agency answers this differently, you have just learned what leaving them will cost.
  • What happens if I want to leave in month three? On almost everything you tell us and it stops that month. Search takes sixty days’ written notice, because it’s booked ahead. Either way there’s no term to run out.
  • What will you report, and can I check it myself? Calls and contact requests, and yes, on your own phone.

Those are the same four questions on the ranking guarantee page, aimed at us instead. If we ever answer them the way the last agency did, leave, and take everything with you.
